Minutes of Pendleton Sportsman’s Club meeting on October 10, 2006

Call to Order.  Meeting opened by President Dennis Loftis at 1835.

Approval of September’s minutes as published.

Report of Secretary/Treasurer.  Dennis reported.  Account information; balance is $1,212.13, with no outstanding checks or bills due.  The total member count is 57, 47 active duty/10 retired military & civilian.

Neal Caluya, Base Game Warden
-Electric boat motors are permitted in estuary boat zones for duck hunters.
-Frank Hernandez, Game Warden, will conduct a Hunter Safety Course on October 21, 0800-1630, in building 2265.  Contact Warden’s at 725-3360 if interested.
-Deer hunters must check in for assigned hunting area no later than 0445.  Potluck deer hunter drawing will be at 0445.
-Will find out and report if volunteers are needed to assist wardens.
-Will research and report about Jardine Canyon road closures.  Gary Baumann will also contact Joe Vaineharrison, Base Range Control Officer, about the same.
-Will find out and report if using civilian personnel as “Bird-dogs” for deer hunters is permitted.
-Reported Archery hunters have taken only three deer even though number of hunters has doubled from last year.

Committee Reports
-Membership Committee.  Nothing to report. Dues can be paid at Club meetings or mailed in.  See the Club Website for mailing address at http://thesportsmansclub.netfirms.com.
-Buildings and Grounds Committee.  Club meetings will be at building number 24065 in the 24 area next to the PX and Gym. 
-Publicity Committee.  The Club will contact the Single Marines Program, website www.mccscp.com/recreation/smp/index.cfm, and ask them to help promote the Club and outdoor activities aboard the base.
-Fishing Committee
  –Free fishing trips still available through the Dana Wharf Sportfishing.  See Fishing News on the Clubs website for more information.  The new POC is 2ndLt Curtis Williamson, contact him at curtis.williamson@usmc.mil, if interested.  Active duty can go for free throughout the week.
SALT water report
-Fred Wolfrom from Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle reported ocean fishing is slow.  Surf fishing continues to be good for croaker using clams.  Del Mar boat basin on base is good for all bottom species now.   
FRESH water report-
-Lake O’Neill- Water level low, boat ramp closed, all fishing is slow, a few catfish, bass and crappie are being caught.
-Lake Wohlford-Bass fishing is good, crappie slow.  Trout stocking will be starting soon in most local lakes.
-Hunting Committee
  -Club pheasant hunt planned for November 11/12 in the Niland area.  Don Rostron is the event coordinator.
  -Gary Baumann and John Gilstrap are researching Club pig hunt at Vandenberg AFB.  They will provide a report at next meeting.
  -Rifle sight-in area at Orosco Ridge in BLM land is open.  Contact rangers for more information.


-Project Committee.  Chairman Jim Post reports:
  -El Toro Archers, Inc. with 150 members would like to partner with Club to fix and maintain archery ranges on base.  All interested archers contact Jim at 949-369-5257 or vtsjim@aol.com.
  -Coordinating with archery shop near Miramar to get archery equipment at wholesale.
  -Mentioned that if all clubs on base were to consolidate that insurance liability cost would be less.
  -Still working with Base on obtaining permission to fire shotguns with slugs at Range 103, Wilcox range.
  -Aivars Berzins will organize a group to build new duck blinds and repair the ones we have now.  If you want to help contact him at jlberz@aol.com or 760-720-3729.  Work on duck blinds is authorized anytime from September to March during the non-nesting season. 

Old and unfinished business
-The Club still needs to get members qualified as Range Safety Officers (RSO) and Officers-In-Charge (OIC) by the Base.  Any Club member can receive the training and become qualified as an RSO/OIC.  The Base RSO/OIC course requirements have changed, see attached RSO.zip file for more information.  Please support your club by getting you RSO cards.

New business
-Deer tag exchange can be done now at the Wardens Office Building (WOB), building 25155.
-Rifle deer season will be open on weekends and some holidays from October 14 to November 26th.
-Rifle sight-in/familiarization fire dates for next year will be discussed at February meeting.
-Fred Wolfrom will contact POC in Iraq regarding mailing donated fishing tackle for use by servicemembers in Iraq.
-Project Committee will contact MCCS to co-sponsor Kids Fishing Derby at Lake O’Neill next year.
-Corporal Ed Basto will coordinate with Wounded Warrior Program on base to take wounded servicemembers out hunting and fishing.
-November 5th, Frank Alessio will be conducting NRA RSO course at the Escondido Fish & Game association near Lake Wolford.  For more information call Frank at 760-743-8718.
-Members need to keep their email addresses up to date, if you have a new email address notify Tom at tjohnson@osec.com.
  
The NOVEMBER Club meeting will be THE FIRST TUESDAY, November 7TH at 1830 in Bldg 24065.
