Base Game Warden’s Report
  • Chief Game Warden Victor Yoder promulgated information on Hunter Safety Training.  At 0830 on the 3rd Saturday of every month, the California Hunter Education and Safety Course will be conducted in the Warden’s Office Building (Bldg 2648).  This is a prerequisite for obtaining a hunting license if you have not had a previous valid hunting license or Hunter Education Course in the State of California.  This course is provided at No Cost to the attendees.  Call the Game Warden’s Office @ 760-725-3360 of your intent to take the course.
  • Wildlife Technician Mike Tucker requested assistance for wildlife water guzzler maintenance of two personnel for the following Mondays @ 0900 listed below.  Volunteers are still required for 18 June & 02 July 2007 and the projects listed below:
    • 18 June 2007 (Aivars Berzins volunteered and one more volunteer requested for this date.)
    • 02 July 2007 (Aivars Berzins volunteered and one more volunteer requested for this date.)
    • Spring-Fed Guzzler in Horno Canyon – A volunteer is needed to take the lead on repairing this guzzler and defining an approximate start date.  Mike Tucker will coordinate  access for the training area and provide any WOB equipment necessary.  Other volunteers will support as necessary.
    • Refinishing the Concrete Guzzlers.  This work can only be done between August 31st and February 15th due to base environmental policies.  The plan is to refinish 6 guzzlers this year and 6 guzzlers next year.  It would be great to refinish the 5 San Mateo Canyon guzzlers over one weekend this year (2007).  With unity of effort, we can get a lot done in a short period of time.  It is proposed that this as a camping/guzzler repair weekend, which would require 10 people for two days.  If it's too difficult to get everyone together on one weekend, we can work on these guzzlers on an individual basis.  Ten volunteers are requested for this effort.
    • Installing New Guzzlers.  Installation of 6 new guzzlers this year (2007) is an achievable goal. This work requires a volunteer comfortable with wood working and would entail building 6 rain collecting roofs with the lumber and corrugated metal we already have on hand.  This volunteer could come in on their own schedule.
    • Fiberglass Repair-We also need a volunteer with experience or interest in repairing fiberglass to help fix up our tanks and drinkers before we put them back into the field.

Michael Tucker will be away from work until 17 June 2007; you can contact him at tuckersandiego@sbcglobal.net or 858-610-6089.

This program is extremely important for providing a potential source of water to wildlife especially with the dry season approaching.  If you can volunteer for these projects please call the Warden’s Office @ 760-720-3360 or email:  michael.j.tucker@usmc.mil or tuckersandiego@sbcglobal.net.

Committee Reports
  • Fishing Committee
    • Both salt water and fresh water fishing continue to be productive.  With the warmer weather Bass are starting to hit various lures at local lakes and Crappie are hitting on Lake O'Neill.  Lakes Wolford, Henshaw and Sutherland have both been good for Bass, Crappie and Catfish.  Saltwater club members reported good catches Sand Bass, and Rockfish in deeper water.  Halibut are hitting live Sardines and Plastic Jigs in the lagoon entrances.
    • Both Alex Berzins email:  Alex@sharkbitefishing.com and Gerard Charest email:  gcharest@cox.net are avid salt water fishermen.  They have offered and would be glad to take out Active Duty Personnel and Club members off the coast of San Diego.  Contact them directly to make arrangements.

Hunting Committee-Pig hunt at Vandenberg Air Force Base scheduled for the weekend of 16-17 June 2007 was cancelled due to difficulties in securing appropriate lodging arrangements due to a large number of Vandenberg personnel on PCS receiving priority for temporary on base quarters.  Don’t give up hope; we’ll try to schedule another trip and notify club members.

Old Business
