Minutes of the Pendleton Sportsman's Club
11 September 2007

Call to Order. Meeting convened in the Wardens Office Building (WOB), Bldg 2648 at 1835.

Approval of August 2007 minutes as published. To view these and other minutes log on to Pendleton Sportsman's Club at: www.sportsmansclub.net. Our website will also provide you with fishing news and hunting news and pictures, history of Club events such as the February 2007 Vandenberg Pig Hunt, deer harvest statistics from the 2006 hunting season as well as other useful information and contacts.

  • Bank Balance $935.33 as of the end of August 2007.
  • Total member count is 81: 42 active duty, 39 retired military, DOD employees, and civilians.

Base Game Warden’s Report

  • Chief Game Warden Victor Yoder promulgated information on Hunter Safety Training. At 0830 on the 3rd Saturday of selected months, the California Hunter Education and Safety Course will be conducted in the Warden’s Office Building (Bldg 2648). This is a prerequisite for obtaining a hunting license if you have not had a previous valid hunting license or Hunter Education Course in another state. This course is provided at No Cost to the attendees. Call the Game Warden’s Office @ 760-725-3360 for information and to sign-up for the course.
  • Mandatory Deer Hunter (Rifle & Shotgun) Safety Briefs are scheduled for the following dates:
    • Sat. 29 September 2007 @ 0900.
    • Wed. 03 October 2007 @ 1730.
    • Tue 09 October 2007@ 1830. During the October Meeting of the Pendleton Sportsman’s Club. Chief Game Warden Yoder will conduct the Deer Hunting (Rifle & Shotgun) Safety Brief for Club members and all others who attend.
    • Wed. 10 October 2007 @ 1730

Everyone who plans to deer hunt with a rifle or shotgun must attend one of these safety briefings. In addition, prospective hunters can fill out and submit deer hunting area preference forms at the end of the brief. Up to seven (7) area preferences can be listed on the preference forms. If preference areas are not open for hunting or hunters don’t get drawn in the lottery, “pot-luck” or first come-first serve areas are available for deer hunters after the lottery preference areas are assigned for each hunting day.

Deer Tags - Camp Pendleton deer tags are available at the W.O.B. You need to have a Base hunting permit and an unfilled deer tag or application, which will be exchanged for a Base G-10 tag.

  • Fishing Committee
    • Both Alex Berzins email: Alex@sharkbitefishing.com and Gerard Charest email: gcharest@cox.net are avid salt-water fishermen. They have offered and would be glad to take out Active Duty Personnel and Club members off the coast of San Diego. Contact them directly if you wish to make arrangements.
  • Hunting Committee
    • Great Dove hunt, a big thanks to Ralph Eddins for organizing it.

Old Business

  • Rifle Sight-in: Did you miss that big buck last year at 200 yards because your rifle didn’t shoot where you were aiming? Sight in your rifle at the Camp Pendleton Rifle Range 103, Wilcox Range, on 16 September 2007 @ 0700. A separate email will be sent providing more information pertaining to the Rifle Sight-in.   • The Pendleton Sportsman's Club still needs to members qualified as Range Safety Officers (RSO) and Officers-in-Charge (OIC) by the Base. The first step is to complete the CD training; these CDs are available on the Pendleton Sportsman's Club website.

New Business

  • Archery - If you wish to sharpen up your archery skills and receive some expert coaching, fill out the application for the El Toro-Pendleton Archers (ETPA) Club, on the Club website. ETPA has scheduled a 3D-archery shoot at the SOI archery range on 07 October 2007. Club members will provide expert guidance and equipment for archery practice. The Club provides a 14-target field range and a practice area with targets ranging from 10 to 80 yards. The Club also sponsors 3-D tournaments as well as charity events. The SOI archery range is open daily from dawn to dusk. Membership in the El Toro-Pendleton Archers Club is free for all Active Duty and Retired military.   • Lake O’Neill Kids Fishing Derby. This is a free event on September 22, 2007, from 0700-1200 for kids up to 15 years old. No fishing license required. Prizes will be awarded for heaviest fish, and largest Carp, Bass and Catfish. Free cookout from 1100-1200. Take a kid fishing. A separate email will be sent out providing additional information and for more information call 725-5611 or 725-5135. The Club needs to provide six volunteers to assist with this event.   • Guzzler Update. Mike Tucker, Base Wildlife Biologist Technician, provided a very informative and detailed Guzzler Update handout. He also requests volunteers to help with the Guzzler program. Some of the projects are guzzler resurfacing, guzzler research, refilling guzzlers, and installing new guzzlers. Please contact Mike if you have interest in the Guzzler program and can volunteer: 760-725-3360 or michael.j.tucker@usmc.mil.
  • Duck Hunting. Duck hunters will have a lottery for hunting areas; area preference sheets will be available on October 6, 2007. To hunt ducks you must have both a Federal and State duck stamp, California hunting license, and Base hunting permit.

Next Meeting. October’s meeting will be held on Tuesday, 09 October 2007@ 1830 in the Wardens Office Building (Bldg 2648).
