Base Game Warden’s Report

This month’s Hunter Safety Course is being held at the Game Warden’s Office (Building 2648) on Sunday 20 June 2010 at 0830 sharp. Be a bit early. This course is required to obtain a hunting license, (if you don’t have one) and is valid for all states.

Committee Reports

Committees are now forming for the three major fields of activity in the Pendleton Sportsman’s Club. Their focus is to organize and conduct two events each calendar year.

  • Archery Committee
    • A second tournament is now scheduled for September 25. It will be a two-day shoot with overnight camping at the Beach Club. Glen Simmons obtained advanced reservations at the Beach Club, authored a flyer, and began circulating them to all Southern California archery shops and clubs.
    • Bear State Archers (located near Lake Henshaw) is offering a special membership deal for active duty and retired military. Members get free admission to all tournaments and 24/7 access to the range. Contact Bear State Membership Chairman Chauncy Newlin (760-743-6015) or Glen Simmons for details.
    • A Range Safety Course will be presented by Ryan McMurtrey every Tuesday at 1130 at the Game Warden’s Office (Building 2648). This class is a prerequisite for use of the Archery Range.
  • Fishing Committee
    • The Fishing Committee has formed, with the following charter members:
      • Allen Seamore
      • Grant Depew
      • Ryan McMurtre
    • The focus this year will be on surf and fly fishing. There was discussion of organizing a fishing trip up the 395 along the eastern Sierra crest and another near the Camp Pendleton Beach Club.
  • Hunting Committee
    • The Hunting Committee has formed, with Aivars Berzins as one of the proposed charter members. Establishing a relationship with the Camp Pendleton Duck and Quail Club was discussed, as well as the trap and skeet range. A proposal to acquire loaner gear was amended into a mentorship program instead, although the cub may elect to acquire some basic supplies such as loaner vests. This will help avoid any liability issues.
    • Jim Post announced a deal for a guided pheasant hunting trip in South Dakota. The season is October through March. Round trip air fares are as low as $300 round-trip (Allegiant Airlines from LAX) if booked well in advance. Guided hunt packages range from $175 per day for just a hunt with dogs and lunch to $300 per day for the hunt plus dogs, motel, meals, and transport.
    • An even-year turkey hunting season in San Diego County at the base of Palomar Mountain was also discussed as a potential club hunting opportunity.
    • The North Country Shootist Association is a great place to sight-in rifles (out to 890 yards). It is located 5 miles east of Highway 15 on Interstate 76, on the Pala Indian Reservation. It is open Mondays 8AM until 2PM to non-members. Active duty Marines can shoot for a flat rate of $15 per day. Civilians can shoot for a couple days at $20 per day, and then will be asked to join the club ($50 per year). For more information, call Harold at 760-727-9160 or visit their website.

Old Business

  • There was no outstanding old business at this meeting.
  • Regulations
    • The upgraded security system is now in place for Civilian club members not affiliated with Camp Pendleton.. Any Civilian Sportsman’s Club members who don’t have a permanent base access credential should contact Glen Simmons (949) 492 4722 to be entered into the Pendleton Security Database so they can gain regular access (you can come on the base 3 times in any 45 day period without this security clearance).

New Business

  • A motion was unanimously passed to create a single date for membership renewals, instead of renewing continuously based on club member anniversary dates. Membership dues will now be due on January 1 of each year. This will simplify the renewal process. New memberships will not be pro-rated when initiated during the calendar year.

Membership Renewals

You can renew your membership at the next meeting or by sending a check to:

Pendleton Sportsman’s Club
P.O. Box 117
Oceanside, California 92049

If you are new and applying for membership there are 2 forms that need to be filled out, the Relase of Liability Form and the Personal Information Form which will add your name to the EMAIL List.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 1925.

Next Meeting: TUESDAY, 13 July 2010 @ 1830 in the Game Warden’s Office (Building 2648).
